The Socio-legal Implications of XR and the Metaverse within eSports

Background

In collaboration with MGI Arena, this on going PhD project aims to uncover the socio-legal implications of XR and the Metaverse use within live eSports events.

Challenge

Currently, eSports governance is highly fragmented, with game publishers holding most regulatory power because they own the Intellectual Property rights to their games. Furthermore, as XR technologies and the Metaverse become increasingly integrated into the eSports environment, little is known about the socio-legal impacts these developments may bring.

Creative approach

A mixed-methods approach using doctrinal legal analysis and stakeholder interviews will be used to uncover the social-legal implications of XR and the Metaverse to inform a bottom-up approach to governance.

Outcome

This project is still ongoing, however, it hopes to contribute the eSports industry by enhancing knowledge regarding the implications of XR and Metaverse use, and create a bottom-up approach to governance that spotlights stakeholder values.
